How Not to Annoy Agents Edition

Q&A Thursday

Hello!

It's that time again! I love answering your questions, so let's get right to it.

ES asks: How do I get over my lifelong fear that I am an annoying person who is annoying my agent when I ask for confirmation/follow up/etc? My agent is generally a great communicator but as soon as something seems slightly amiss my brain goes to the Bad Place. How can I grapple with that?

If your agent is generally a great communicator, then the work you need to do is probably on yourself. Ask yourself what brings up these feelings. Are you afraid your agent is withholding bad news? Are you afraid you won't sell your book/they won't like the draft/your editor won't buy your option, or any other number of worst case scenarios? Are you afraid you're teetering on the edge of being fired by your agent and one wrong move is going to send you back to the query trenches? Is anything actually amiss or are you just always waiting for the other shoe to drop. I mean, all of these are scary things! But none of them will come about from your sending of one email, even more than one email.
