Q&A Thursday

Hi Friends,

We're going to talk about workshops today, and time is running out to sign up for a non-fiction writing retreat in TUSCANY with me, bestselling author/ghostwriter Holly Crawshaw ,and New York Times- and Sunday Times-bestselling editor James Stephens, brought to you by Kevin Anderson Assocs. I am so excited about this, and you should join us this September 20-26.

Now, on to today's questions.

R asks: How do you evaluate whether a workshop is actually worth doing? I am always seeing very cool writers and editors offering various workshops (a smart way to make some extra money, in my opinion) and I'm always torn between thinking "certainly THIS workshop will unlock everything for me" and "dude you don't need a workshop you just need to put your head down and keep working." I'm certain that sometimes a workshop can genuinely open doors, and also that some workshops are a waste of money. But how do I evaluate whether the actual workshop I'm looking at is a good fit for my goals? Are there specific things to look for? Certain phases of the work that are better suited to being workshopified than others? Certain personalities or traits that make workshops a better fit for some writers than others? I'd love to hear any tips you have for figuring out what's worth doing and what might not be. Thank you!!
