B asks: I’ve heard that for authors who have previously self-published, a modest sales history can sometimes be a consideration when querying a traditionally published debut. I have a self-published cozy fantasy trilogy that’s fairly niche and unconventional within the genre, with strong reader reviews but relatively modest sales. I’m currently writing a more commercial contemporary fantasy romance that I plan to query in about six months. From an agent’s perspective, would there be meaningful value in prioritizing efforts to increase sales of my existing trilogy before I query, or are those sales unlikely to make much difference to how the new project is evaluated?
