Q&A Thursday

Hi friends,
We have a bit of a heavy one today, so get your emotional support iced coffee and buckle up. I'm sending you the excess joy and pride us New Yorkers are feeling today after the Knicks' win. We needed this, y'all. We all do.

Anon asks: This is a vulnerable and rather humiliating question: I am in my early 40s, still working on my first novel, and struggling with a sense of "it's all too late." I very much realize that I am not old – and yet, when I look at the people publishing debut novels, they are mostly 5 to 10 years younger than I am. I realize that I should be able to find the motivation within to finish this novel for myself, and not look for external validation. And yet, it sometimes feels hard to keep going when I worry there will be no market for my work. So, I guess I am trying to ask: how drastically do one's chances of finding an agent and selling a novel diminish with age? Thanks for considering this question – I so appreciate the work you do!
